EAGLE SCOUT’S
Boy Scouts
America
Bronsted-Searl Post 93 of the American Legion in Tomahawk has sponsored a Boy Scout Troop for 85
years.
Troop 548 and Post 93 have a very close relationship. The post supports the troop financially by paying the
registration fees for the troop leaders and for all the awards and advancement recognitions that the Scouts
earn.
Post 93 also provides the troop with a meeting place. They have their own meeting room in the American
Legion clubhouse where they can display the troop awards that they have earned and have an atmosphere
that promotes the ideals of Scouting. For the Scouts this is a special place that they can call their own.
In the seventy-seven years that Troop 548 has been sponsored by Post 93, forty Scouts have reached the
rank of Eagle Scout. Literally hundreds of boys have been members of Troop 548 over the years and owe
the experiences that they enjoyed in scouting to the dedicated Veterans of post 93 who have provided the
opportunity for the boys of the Tomahawk area to be members of the Boy Scouts of America.
In return, the Troop participates with the Post in Memorial Day activities, placing flags on Veterans graves
and assists the post in any other way they can. They also work with the post in providing service through
Eagle Scout service projects that are of benefit to the American Legion and the community.
In the seventy-eight years that the troop has been in existence there have only been six Scoutmasters and all
but one have been former members of the troop under a former Scoutmaster. This in itself is some kind of
record and shows that the dedication of the leaders and the outstanding support of the American Legion has
made a positive impact in the lives of these many young men.
On June 15th, 1916 The Boy Scouts of America were chartered by an act of Congress, and only eight year
later the first Boy Scout Troop in Tomahawk was chartered to Bronsted-Searl Post 93.
Tomahawk Troop #3 was chartered in 1924. In 1927 the designation was changed to Troop 21 of the
Lincoln Council of Lincoln County. That same year Lincoln and Marathon Councils merged forming the
Samoset Council B.S.A.
In 1932 the troop was too large to operate efficiently and was split into two troops. Troop 48 was chartered
and was also sponsored by Post 93 with Scoutmaster John L’Abbe.
In 1934 Troop 21 did not renew its charter and again there was only one troop.
In 1960 the Council was reorganized and Troop 48 became Troop 348 of Musky trails District. In 1980 it
became Troop 548 of Headwaters District and in 2004 Troop 548 of the Northwoods District of Samoset
Council.
Thanks to the Veterans of Post 93 Scouting is a strong and active program in the Tomahawk area.
